Genetics Kit trying to install Fraps fix | |

So, I know I had this issue, and at a search, I see it's come up multiple times over the past several years, but nobody's...actually posted a solution.
For some reason, with some people, when you download the .exe to install the classic, basic Genetics Kit for CD/DS, and you go to run it, instead of running the GK install, it runs the install for the screenshot (etc) program Fraps. Thought I was going crazy for a while there, to be honest.
Trial and error found an easy solution that worked for me, at least: uninstall my existing copy of Fraps from my system and delete all associated files. Once the Fraps setup files didn't exist anymore, the Genetics Kit installed fine and loaded/operated fine.
Why does it try to do that? Heck if I know. But getting rid of the conflicting program worked. Might even be able to reinstall Fraps now, but I haven't tried.
Anyway, just thought it'd be good to have an actual answer somewhere on the forum for the next time somebody searches for it. |

I've come across this too - I think it could be that the installation file is named something so generic that Fraps' installation file and maybe others, too, might override the GK's.

I had the same issue, but with a speech synthesizer software. Uninstalling it did the trick for me too. |

From what I can tell from non-Creatures related troubleshooting, it could be a corrupted registry error (the solution they give is the same). From what I gather whatever program it tries to install could have installed badly Way Back Whenever.
Alternatively it could be that Fraps (or whatever) doesn't clear its files out of the TEMP folders after it installs, and then the GK tries to put its temporary files in there and can't, because even if the actual install exe isn't generically named it could be that whatever it unpacks temporarily could be. It seems like a lot of people had luck getting programs like that to install if they put the install .exe in an empty folder, but I THINK the GK install might demand to be in the same location as the C3 exe. I know one of the kits does. |
