GOG creatures on Linux?

This is kind of hypothetical since I do not have a linux OS though I'm considering it, it's route I expect to take once I consider Window 10 is obsolete, so i've got some time left yet, I guess it would be nice to know some things before I get there :P
But what would people here say is the best way to play GOG Creatures on a linux OS, if any?
Is there particular OS that works better? How does it function on WINE or a Virtual Machine? Can you just install it straight on? Are there problems I'd likely encounter? How do the genetics kits and the like function?

Creatures 3/DS run excellently on Linux.

WINE is the best choice, IMO. You may have to futz with color depth manually; look up other games that demand 16-bit color and tweak accordingly.

There is a Linux version of the engine, but it takes some doing to get running; Debian is the best choice for this as it has the most comprehensive archives of old versions of libraries IME.

http://creatures.wikia.com/wiki/Linux_Docking_Station_Instructions has some part of the instructions for that.

Genetics kit, CAOS tool, etc. are iffy in WINE; you may want to have another install in a VM for using them, or just use a VM outright.

Creatures 1 and 2 do not take to Linux as well; a VM would be a better choice for them. You don't need much, an old copy of windows XP cut off from the internet is more than enough.

Overall a VM is the most clear-cut way to get it running; you can just 'install it straight on' using one. It just may be more of a hassle getting files transferred back and forth consistently.

Hi there,

I recently tried to run Creatures Exodus on linux. It's a very specific ARM-based linux machine (basically, a Raspberry Pi microcomputer) but it runs an x86 ubuntu OS.

I've been unable to use wine to run C3 or DS correctly on my side, but that's probably because the Raspberry Pi is basically ABSOLUTELY NOT built to run that kind of software.

To play the game, I installed the standalone Linux Docking Station version. It's pretty tricky to achieve because DS uses a lot of old linux dependencies that are not directly available from apt-get. I downloaded them separatly, and saved them in an archive on my Dropbox account because they are quite hard to find.

But the good thing is, by installing C3 from the Gog Creatures Exodus package on my Windows computer, and then by uploading the game's files on my Linux machine, I can dock DS with C3 even if C3 is a "windows only" version. All I have to do is to do a "symbolic link" as described here :

You got it to run on an ARM-based machine? That's pretty impressive.

How hard would it be to recompile the Linux version for Android? :p

I did almost nothing to make an x86 programm running on an ARM processor : I'm just using a commercial software that emulates an x86 environment on the Raspberry Pi, which allows ubuntu and debian programs to run.

The hardest part on my side was to install DS on Ubuntu, because of the age of those dependencies and the specificites of emulating ubuntu on the Pi (the game's folders are not the same as on a normal ubuntu machine) ...
