So, I'm not 100% sure this is the right place for this thread, but I have a question!

Outside of Wolfling/Feral runs, what kinds of challenges, goals and projects do folks run in creatures games? I like to have a coherent goal when I'm playing a game and I'm looking for ideas of things to accomplish.

I hope you don't mind the link spam, I kept coming up with more things. Most of these are for C3/DS since that's the version I play the most. There are a few useful random generators for C3/DS. There's this one and this one for some general ideas. I've used them in the past and had a few interesting worlds from them. My favorite of them is probably the "Lost Floppy Challenge" where you only have a limited number of eggs at the start and you can't hatch any more gen 1's after that.

As for goals and challenges, there's quite a few. A fun challenge I've done in the past is the random event feral run. It has rules and can be run in C2 and C3/DS. There's also a recent challenge someone post on here. And there's an ugly crossbreeding challenge.

Some other ideas are: breed norns up to a certain generation, breed for a certain color, mix toxic (or any breed that eats detritus) and non-toxic creatures together, breed colortrue creatures together to see what colors you get, breed colortrue breeds to regular breeds and see what horrible mutants you get, and just randomly splicing creatures together or splicing them to get a certain look.

If you want to try out genetics, you might want to try my own generator. It generates random sprite and color combinations that you can use to make a weird looking creature with. You could also ignore the sprite part of it and use it to randomize a creature's pigment genes. It only works for C2 and C3/DS though. C1 uses a different slot system for it's breeds. Here's a link to one of the better C3/DS genetic tutorials.

And if you want to try out coding something in C3/DS, the Caos Chaos and Boolean Logic Intro are good starting points. For C2, you could try this series of tutorials. I haven't tried them myself, but they're probably good.

TBH, Creatures is a very sandboxy game. People invent their own goals. there's really nothing 'built in' to accomplish. Mostly what I do is focused on genetics and studying how their brain works. I have one eternal genetic project that I'm forever tinkering with and a number of related projects - painting a metaroom, making agents. I also like trying to set up stable worlds and colonies that can run on forever without needing my help.

Conclude with killer catchphrase.

One thing I've kind of been trying to do is breed creatures with their appearance genes completely mutated from the starting population.
I never really stick to a population long enough for it to diverge very strongly, but it might help if I aim for something visible...maybe. >_>

Not really a challenge, but scrap worlds usually turn out pretty interesting. Rejects from other populations, some random creatures, splicer "accidents", genetic experiments (both successful and failed)... Everything thrown into one big pot to see what happens :P

Also, how about the selective breeding challenge? Have 5 norns using sprites of breed A. However, using a genetic editor, replace 1 body part of each norn to look like breed B. Have one with a B head, one with a B torso, one with a B tail and so on.
Now try to get a creature that ONLY uses B-sprites.
You can set up different sub-challenges for this, too. Least real time used, least generations used, least offspring created, etc...

Lets play plants! Photosynthesis... Photosynthesis... Photosynthesis...

Thanks for all the ideas, guys! :D I'm going to have a lot of fun with these.

I tend to enjoy breeding a certain amount of generations. Although I usually wolfing run this, it can be maintained in a more strict and nurtering way. Usually ones need to add in a few gen1 boosters though...

Breeding for certain sprites & color tints/hue swaps is another thing to tinker with.

Making creatures survive in the more hostile rooms, like the grendel jungle, can be interesting and may require a lot of "baby sitting" if you like tending to your creatures a lot.

I'm a lot of a "gardener" myself, I like moving and adding various organisms to diffrent rooms and then make sure they stay as I wish.
