C1 Frost Grendel

Image of C1 frost grendel with ball

So in honor of CCSF 2020, I decided to create a C1 Frost grendel. I had planned to try to finish them during the Festival, but I have only managed to work on them two days this last week. Unfortunately we probably will not see them completed in time, but I will try.

The ATT files have been a challenge for me. I am not sure of C1 apps to help with that. I tried NornPose, but it did not work in my version of Windows 7. I am on a Mac, so I may try running it in Wine (the way I actually play/experiment in C1).

I simply used the C1 grendel genome found in the Creatures the Albian Years, and this Grendel is weird. He walks funny, but I remember there being a fix for that. I will just have to track it down.

I actually never raised grendels before, but I remember reading somewhere that their learning is impaired genetically, so they do not remember much. Every once in a while he just stops moving. To the point where I think the game has frozen, but it hasn't, because everything else is still moving and clickable. It is just really weird.

That aside, this guy is funny, because I tickled him a lot early on that every time he sees the cursor he tries to push it. It was subconscious, but every time he did, I tickled him for it. I think he thinks it is a good thing. I think I will have to hide the cursor.

I know how I will do the younger sprites, but I have no idea what to do for the females, but I do want them breed-able.

This looks like a cool project! Can't wait to see how it ends out! [ngrin]

Very pretty!

There's always the option of giving your Grendels a Norn genome and adding a few modifications. Not only will this remove the learning issues, it'll ensure they're breedable too.

Wow! I love them!

C1 seriously lacks good, original-style artwork, Grendel breeds so I'm very much looking forward to it's completion.

(or even release as adult male only would still be cool for now)

So I finished the initial draft of the grendels, but I am not too satisfied with the female grendels. I think the hair is a bit off, especially on the adult female.

Also the way I tinted the graphics left the female grendels hands looking like a solid block of blue, so I will have to adjust the tinting there.

There is also a problem where I think pure white is invisible. And even though it is not in the final sprite, one pixel on one side, will wrap around and show up on the other side, and I cannot figure out why.

Does anyone know if there is a rule about sprite sizes or margins or anything?

I think there is something about sprite sizes, as alot of the C1 norn sprites have floating pixels and other weird anomalies. Pure white can glitch iirc( it'll appear red for me), might have something to do with it being defined more than once in palette.DTA. It appears fine for bees somehow.

You know...wait...nevermind... wait...no...umm...maybe later...

The only thing that looks off to me is that it looks like its limbs have bright outlines, either that or the shadow/darkest parts were made to be super bright.

Re: the pure white issue, generally speaking it's good visual design never to use pure white/black for anything. You can make something look more white or black just by virtue of the surrounding colours and shades.

Those things said, they look really cool (no pun intended)! The spines along the back are a nice touch.

Thank you guys for your feedback, I am going to change the pure white thing. I use a PHP script I wrote to convert PNG images into SPR, so I'll alter it to prevent it from using pure white. I had thought that the sprites were transparent in those places, because they were showing red parts to them. I had thought it was the background showing through, now I know it is the pure white weirdness.

Also, thank you GimmeCat for the feedback about the outlines. I was looking at the grendels trying to figure out what made them look so weird. When you pointed out the outlines, it made sense... clearly I have been looking at the sprites too long. It is like when you've been programming too long without a break and suddenly all your variables look like they are spelled wrong... or maybe that is just me.

So I found out the problem with the outline was caused by anti-aliasing. I had written a PHP script to compile my transparent PNG's to a C1 sprite. Though it ignores pixels with a certain amount of alpha, the others it chooses the closest color. Unfortunately, it doesn't take into account how it actually looks and finds the closest color without transparency. I haven't fixed the script yet, so I just tried to limit semi-transparent pixels.

The female is almost seamless. Still need to fix the old sprites.

The male sprites still need work. I am having a much harder time with them. I keep thinking I've removed the anti-aliasing, compile, export, import... and it is still there.

A new problem I found while taking a screen shot was that I had done the att files in isolation from their alternate side counterpart. As you can see here, their heights do not match up... a rookie mistake

Still, getting much closer.

Oh, and if you need pure white color, use color index 255. I found it by dumping the color indices used by the bee as it was mentioned to contain pure white.

These are amazing, it's been ages since a C1 Grendel breed has been made, I await the results gleefully :)
