I've made a few attempts at modeling out a C3/DS metaroom background through the years, but I've never quite managed to get anywhere with any of those attempts for one reason or another. I want to change that so I'm working on a very simple metaroom BG as a sort of proof-of-concept.

Here's my blog post with a step-by-step of my progress so far.

We'll see if I actually complete it this time! If I do, most likely I'll just release this as a free-to-use background, but maybe I'll get really ambitious and try to make it into a metaroom myself.

I love the concept, and the artwork looks beautiful. How would you recommend learning blender?

Thank you! Unfortunately I am probably entirely the wrong person to ask for that, because my method for learning Blender has been "just kind of wing it and keep trying over the span of like a decade, constantly realizing you've overlooked useful tools and only discover them through accidental keypresses." I have no patience for video tutorials, so that doesn't help much. (I'm also still stuck back on 2.7X; the 2.8 releases sound more accessible for beginners, but they've changed things around just enough that I still haven't managed to get settled in comfortably with the newer versions.)

That said: I always learn best when I have some kind of goal in mind. "Learn how to use Blender" isn't usually enough for me- I need something more along the lines of "learn how to model and texture a wooden stool", "take an existing character model and give it a shirt", etc.

The Blender reference manual is a good start for interface stuff initially and for everything else as you continue to learn. There's also this official playlist of video tutorials for Blender 2.8 Fundamentals - it looks like they've got quick video explanations of the UI and various features, and then a beginner tutorial for a really simple model. That seems like a good starting point if you're entirely new to Blender.

Looks good so far! (Not a fan of video tutorials either.)

Hey, nice work! The Creatures Series is what got me in 3D doing exactly the sort of thing you are doing here, and now I am a professional 3D artist.

I would say doing it the way you are doing now is exactly the right thing. Have a goal, learn how to achieve it and then just have a go. You will do something later and find a technique that would have made your life way easier if you had known about it, but that never really stops.

Video tutorials are OK, but they can go on for ages and you only need one or two tips from it. Documentation for the software is often really good, though generally they get written by coders so can get a bit technical. Another good avenue is the community. Most communities are really friendly and can point out good resources.

Sadly I don't use Blender, but if you ever want Houdini tips just give me a shout!

Again, nice work, and good luck with your progress!

I rendered this out at full-size to get an idea of the scale of the room with creatures in it and I've realized I've got about enough space for an underground room, but I'm not sure what to do with it. Any suggestions?

Also, checking the scale like this makes me think I will have to bridge over the pond as I'd originally planned after all - the slope is probably too steep for creatures to handle well.

For the underground room it could be a seed bank, some kind of nursery or incubator/hatchery combo, just a storage room for not-currently-in-use-agents, or full of mushrooms and plants that don't like light. Maybe look at the area directly under the C2 incubator room for inspiration.

I think bridging over the pond is a good idea. If nothing else, it will benefit the majority of breeds that suck at not drowning.

Here's my blog post with today's WIP stages. (If you make it to the end there's a fun bonus.)

I like the mushroom idea. Maybe I'll do a mushroom garden down there or something.

Sorry, I ran out of interest on this at the time!

I'd still like to work more on this at some point, but that's the case with every other project I've gotten partway into and stopped working on too... Looking it over I think there's still a basic structure that appeals to me but I'm not satisfied with a lot of it. Maybe I'll look into Creative Commons models and see if adding some in gets me to a place I'm happier with.
