So I have some questions.
Sprites refer to the appearance of the creature, yes? Do sprites determine basic color as well, or do you have to play with genes for that?
I've seen lots of notes saying not to play with the black space when editing sprites. Is this because everything not black appears as part of the creature?
How does one test sprites in world?
I may add more, but those are the ones I have right now.

Yes, in the overwhelming majority of creatures, the base color is determined by the sprites. Hypothetically you could do it differently and it'd work fine, but it's not quite the norm.
ChiChi sprites for example are, in fact, purple by default. Their genetics are set to a neutral color. In theory you could make grey sprites and then use genetics to make them purple, but like I said, that is not how most people would do it and might result in some pretty randomly colored crossbreeds.
The classic creatures sprite formats treat pure black (#000000 in your art program of choice) as transparency. Any color deviating from that is considered visible and becomes part of the creature.
Any black you see ingame is a "fake" black, putting 1 point into blue or something.
Usually the difference is too small to tell by eye.
I would recommended a simple script. Cosfiles are basically just the "raw" form of agents and you can easily cobble together a crude one with a plain text editor like notepad. A useless floating object that just so happens to use your personal sprite is like 3 lines of code.

Awesome. Thank you for the info.
How do I tell what sprite goes to what? Like...if its a norn, which norn, and which part it is? Is that in the name somehow, or do I just guess? |

And if I start with the 'background' sprites and draw on them, can I rename them to have them work for head/leg/tai/etc? |

For breed sprites, it's in the name.
