Why do the Ettins love stealing gadgets?

In C3/DS, the Ettins seem to have an affinity to swipe up gadgets from around the spaceship and take them to the desert area. But why is this? It's annoying but kind of cute at the same time.

If you look for an in-lore explanation: They are related to the albian ettins, which were created to tidy up the place.

If you mean the actual simple gameplay mechanics:
- a ridiculous, perpetual amount of boredom (creature torture levels of constant boredom)
- a false instinct that "get gadget" relieves boredom
- a gene that makes them incredibly homesick if holding gadgets
- a unique room type called "ettin home", you know, similar to air and salt water and what not
- an invisible script forcing them to drop gadgets when they are inside "ettin home" as well as making them unable to focus on gadgets, forcing them to seek elsewhere

A tip for dealing with it: there are radio transmitters. If you set them both on the same channel and turn them on, they are effectively connected over huge distances.

Set some gadgets up on timers in the desert, in a place where ettins will ignore them, and use radio transmitters to trigger your "needs constant attention" gadgets, like keeping the aquarium stocked up and setting the volcano on a timer.

The signal emitter (button on a stick thing that constantly sends out signals), connected to the ones that fire every X signals (count gate, maybe?) and radio transmitters on the same channel lets you automate a lot of the stuff that the ecosystem needs to keep going.

The C3 graveyard/memorial room is really good for putting out-of-the-way infrastructure as it's quite inconvenient to get to and creatures rarely stumble into it. That, with radio transmitters, allows you to deal with a lot of ettin-related sabotage.

I always felt that the developers made the C3 ettins gadget-stealers to increase the game's difficulty. You see, fending off Grendels is pretty easy using a Creature Detector and a Sludge Gun.. But if some other guys keep stealing your setup. :P

I typically set up the Creature Detector with a medical transporter so that any ettin entering a certain area will be immediately transported to the sick bay. It isn't completely foolproof but can be a good way of keeping ettins away from your precious gadgets.

The agent Perpetual Teacups helps quite a bit too. It randomly spawns "teacup" gadgets through the ship, and when Ettins bring them home they respawn elsewhere, so it helps save your actually important gadgets by giving the Ettins an endless supply of "safe" gadgets to hunt down.

You can find them at AmberCreatures:

I'm not quite sure exactly HOW they work (ie, if there's something about them to make them more desirable than normal gadgets) but it does seem to make a difference, I don't really have problems with ettins stealing stuff I'm actually using.

They probably produce a very overpowering amount of gadget scent, which the Ettins will be more attracted to than gadgets with weaker scents.

Also to add onto what Papriko said, Ettins have a chemical in their bodies called "Ettin nitrate" which causes their brains to be unable to see gadgets when in the presence Ettin Home scent. The Ettin home room stops the smell of gadgets from existing in that space, which prevents them from trying to hunt down gadgets that they already brought back and can no longer see.

It's interesting to think that shee probably did this sort of thing all the time, to fine-tune the behavior of albian and ark fauna. Though lorewise I like to think they were a bit less cruel about it.

They might have specifically tailored the ettins to clean the ship since they were leaving for sphericus, and were probably going to fix it later, but...well, things happened...

To be fair, despite not liking ettins particularly much (disassembling MY machines, stupid little buggers....), but I made an agent akin to the perpetual teacups, namely the Dummy Gadget

EDIT: The description was written 8 years ago, my english wasn't quite up to par at that time.
