Norns can still phase through those. On balance, I found that the nicer-looking Energy Gate is more effective when doubled-up and set to single-sided mode.

So, having two Gates like this: |>|>

Is more effective than a single Force Field or Gate that pushes in both directions: <|>

If you find your norns escaping containment, I'd recommend this kind of setup.

Sounds good. I'll take that advice and get rid of these crappy looking Force Fields. They actually have a silent Energy Gate on CreaturesCaves. [nsmirk]

Roll Call:

16 Living Norns
57 Dead Norns
10 Starting Norns (Generation 1)
63 Naturally Born Norns (Not Generation 1)

Starting over, they seem to be doing really well. The only thing keeping the population from spiraling rapidly out of control is the population cap. Live Birth is working as intended, which means that my tinkering with the registry to get the 40 Norns Cheat to work did some permanent damage, apparently. Subsequently, it was not the Live Birth COB's fault, as it works as intended. The population cap since my re-installation of the game has maintained a consistent 16-20 this whole time.

I watched Star Trek: Beyond in theaters while the run was going, and it made me think how Creatures 3 could have so much potential. Imagine instead of bio-spheres, you actually went to different planets with vastly different landscapes (Unless that is how it already works? I've always figured the different metarooms were on the ship itself).

Here is another Phantom Brave track, this one encompassing a sweeter feeling in the Creatures games. With this, I can imagine generations of Creatures living in harmony, without war and without plague (Seriously, base genome Norns get sick all of the time. Most of the time, it is fatal too. I am glad that I'm running a base genome for once, to see more what was intended. What was intended is still super hardcore, though, to the point that if I was actively involved in their lives, I would be miserable from how difficult the game is).

The color variance in this group is spectacular for a minimal color genome. Lots of the base starting Norn colors have survived into the current generation (Generation J)

Question: Why does the majority of my population crowd around this particular spot? It's a bit annoying as I can't see what they're up to. They LOVE this spot, and this bridge/dock is where the Norns spend most of their time.

DISASTER!

Leif here is the only Purple Colored (Base Valentine Norn colored) Norn left in the pack. We're currently in Generation N, and the purple color is almost completely hedged out. To be fair, however, the other Norns left are vibrant shades of blue and green, positively gorgeous.

Norns are hilarious when they're horny, and Valentine Norns are always horny. Or, "frisky" as the game dubs them. They do this custom pee dance animation where they rub their legs together super fast, usually with a huge **** eating grin and their eyes bulging wide.

I guess you could say...

They're Norny

[nwink] Heheh... Norny... [nlaugh]

They also have what I'd like to call "Brawl Orgies". They get in a clump, kisspop[1] a ton, and punch the crap out of each other. It doesn't matter if you're a baby or pregnant or what, if you're in this group, you're getting punted. [nscared] Wolfling raises some mean Norns man. I used to have 35 Norn clumps and they didn't fight as much as base genome Norns do.

Seriously, I just saw one of the Norns, Maya, have a child, slap it three times making it angry, then wander off, leaving the child in the desert alone with no other Norns around. Great parent, 10/10. She wasn't "crowded" at the moment, I think she slapped her son in the face 3 times because she felt like it. He was an infant that was just born, too. This was in the span of about 5 seconds from birth. The complexity of the psychology dynamics in this game is astounding. THIS is why I play Creatures. Their odd, unpredictable behaviors that aren't completely random.

As an update on the purple Norn population, this norn named Naem (heh) was born from the union of two blue Norns. I suppose that there is some recessive gene-age going on here, or I'm crazy. The Owner's Kit doesn't lie.

[1]: To those new to Creatures 2, kisspopping is the PG Version of Norn Sex. You know what is really going on, but it is implied only.

That sounds like a great idea. After the upcoming run (I plan runs one run in advance in case they end abruptly and I need to start another) I'll definitely try out Diverse Diet Kannovas. I love Kannova Norns.

Yondon, the Norn here with permanent limping, has a gorgeous mutation that has changed only his leg color to a dull white. Coolest mutation ever. Teenage Mutant Ninja Norns!

Also the Norn Yin was born and then immediately kisspopped and became pregnant. What...

It's not the leg color that changed. It's the leg sprite. It looks to me like he's got an Ettin leg, but I might be wrong about that. Either way the color is different because it's a sprite from some other breed. :)

Also it's not that uncommon for color genes to just straight up mutate at random. So you will sometimes have 'new' colors pop up in populations, like your purple Norn with blue parents. I've actually been tinkering with my Dragon genomes recently to make color breeding more likely to produce mixed colors rather than those of the parents.

It's not about what's in the genome. Mutations aren't limited to the sprites specified in the original genome. They can mutate to any sprite slot available to the game. If there's nothing installed in that slot it'll default to whatever's in Norn A IIRC. Like I said, in this case, the mutation appears to have given that Norn the legs of an Ettin, visually anyway. It's weird, I know, but it's possible!

Sometime I'd like to commission the perfect Norn from someone that knows the genetics kit. No new sprites, just a pale white base sprite Norn that is perfect in every way. Almost always happy, immune to disease, very fertile, intelligent the works. A simple, easy-to-use Norn that requires little effort. I'd want to use the Akamai Canny Norn as a base, and give them credit for the edited Akamai too.

I would take credit for it on the idea and host it, but I would of course give credit entirely where it is due. I'd love it if someone knew how to do that. Please message me if you know how to do something like that in the genetics kit. :)

Well... sort of. It's not actually part Ettin, it's still 100% Norn. It just looks like an Ettin in the legs. They're still of the Norn species and that won't change - I don't think that part of the genome can mutate, though I may be wrong. And those kinds of mutations are random - if it happens again they won't necessarily get, say, an Ettin head. You may get the head of a different breed of Norn, or a Grendel. But yeah, they can definitely exhibit some weird mutations at times!

I've reached Generation Z! I'm celebrating this occasion by exporting ALL generation Z Norns from this run and giving them to the community! Eight Norns included.

Enjoy! Click this.

With that said, I am concluding this run. With all the problems I've had with it, compounded on the fact that I watched these guys much more often than the other runs, it has gotten a bit boring. There is more to life than debugging Creatures 2![noddeye]

I'll see you guys on the next run, where we'll be getting hardcore. [npirate]

Alright guys and gals, it's time for another...

Akamai Canny Master Race Wolfling Run!

I know what you're saying: "But DN, haven't you done enough Wolfling Runs with the Akamai Canny Genome?"

My answer would be...

______________________________Hardcore Akamai Canny Norns Wolfling Run_____________________________

Now, you may think that title is super metal, and you'd be right, but what I mean to insinuate is that the traditional rules of my Wolfling Runs are being thrown to the wind here.

We're going old school. No COBs, no nothing. I hatch the babies, teach them language so I know what they're saying, and introduce nothing else to the world. Just let them roam free, no Energy Gates, no Meat Vines, NOTHING.

I recently found a stash of really nice colored Akamai Canny Norns here. If you like Akamai Canny Norns, I highly recommend using these. These Norns will be Generation 1 of the Hardcore Wolfling Run (I envision in the future this will eventually be a dead link. When/if that happens, message me. I have all of them on stockpile).

I'll update again when these poor, innocent Norns are thrust into the hard, unforgiving world.

Actually, my money is on some of them never making it out of the hatchery.

We will see...

May our lord and savior Cathy keep safe these poor souls from her perch in the heavens... may her watchful, sleeping eye carry them forth unto eternia. May they not starve to death horribly.

Edit: I lied. I WILL implement some of the update COBs that fix inherently broken things in the game. I also got rid of the floating power-ups so that the Norns are not distracted by them.

I've imported the Norns, and... this Akamai Canny group is now the group I will use when playing this game for fun (Wait, wasn't this supposed to be for fun? Oh well). They're really vibrant.

Baby got back!

Here is a better view of the population of babies.

Aww... one of the Norns went into unconciousness, and the rest of the Norns crowded around him, slapping him trying to wake him up. Needless to say, this killed him faster. [nblank]

Another sad instance occurred when one of the Norns died of starvation. A frog Norn went up to the body and kept activating it, "praising" the dead Norn, until it left the mortal coil.

These intrepid explorers were the first to leave the hatchery! I'm going to follow them for a bit, and see where they go.

Edit: They went back down, grabbed a third Norn, and went back up. Then they went back down, and got a whole bunch of them. Finally, one of the Frog Norns chumped them and left them up there, taking the lift back down into the hatchery.

I watched the 007 movie Spectre recently. Guess what? It sucks. [nlaugh] Just like all the Daniel Craig James Bond movies seem to, actually. What a bummer.

0 Living Norns
28 Dead Norns
11 Starting Norns (Generation 1)
17 Naturally Born Norns (Not Generation 1)

Well, they're all dead. Most starved in the hatchery, while 5 of them jumped into the sea in an act of suicide. The rest hobbled around like idiots looking for food (To give newcomers to Creatures 2 an idea, there is food everywhere in Creatures 2. Just to the left of the starting island is an oasis of plant life).

And these were... Akamai Canny Norns! Not some low-rent IKEA Nova Subterra Norns, these are the real deal! [nsad]

I have no idea how the "purist" Wolfling Runners do it. If Akamai Canny Norns can't survive on their own, how are the default genomes supposed to?

In other less depressing news, on that island to the left of the starting one, did you know that if you click the beehive, a TON of bees come out? I thought that was pretty neat.

(I did this experiment after the Norns were all dead, of course. I didn't affect the game world at all while they were on the run)

Stick around next time to see TheDrunkenNorn's Wolfling Runs travel through time!

Mmyep. This surprises me, Creatures 1 on both the PC and Playstation doesn't seem to have any problems. It's as if the extra intelligence detriments the Norns in Creatures 2. I don't quite understand.

It's as much to do with the environment as the norns themselves. With fixed genomes it's not so bad, but the world itself is poorly designed.

There are mis-categorized edibles that confuse their eating instincts. Wallbonking (room walls are barriers they cannot see nor understand) delivers painful and confusing messages of punishment. The open sea, coupled with inticing "ledge" objects and the fishing pole that fascinate and draw norns close to it, is placed ridiculously close to the hatchery, and represents just one of many environmental hazards that are too nebulous and vague for norns to learn to avoid. Certain scripted behaviours are bugged and cause additional learning problems.

It really is unfortunately necessary to fully patch C2, use custom genomes and fix the problems with the default world and scripts. The game, as first launched, was a disaster, but that doesn't mean it lacks potential-- and that potential can be reached, it just requires a lot of modding.

In response to GimmeCat's sudden epiphany-causing post, I'm going to be changing the next Wolfling Run! The Time Travel one will have to wait, as will the dietary Kannovas.

@GimmeCat I didn't realize it was that bad. My heavy-handed COB usage made the game fun and exciting, I really didn't know how badly the game was set up. I was blaming the Norns, but... everything. Geez. Thank you very much for the input, I learn more about this game as the days go by.

Ehem... I'll see you guys next time, where we go into isolation... for science!

It's time for another Akamai Canny Wolfling Run! again!

I was not satisfied with the last Wolfling Run, as it was pitifully short and did nothing but point out just how bad Creatures 2 is for being one of the best artificial life simulators ever.

_______________________________Isolated Akamai Canny Norns Wolfling Run_______________________________

In this run, I will be hosting an entire population of Norns in a crampt interior setting (much like my first attempts at playing Creatures 2). For those of you who are unaware, Creatures 2 has a large hatchery area built into a cave system under a desert; this is where you start the game, and hatch your first Norns. I will be having the Wolfling Run in the room under the hatchery.

The Norns will never see the outside world, and they will not be subject to the vast array of dangers of the above-lands. Their community will forever be underground.

Remember... in Vault 101, no one ever enters, and no one ever leaves.

This is the first baby of the run. Some kind of technicolor Norn abomination. Why does this look like the static on my Nintendo Entertainment System when it crashes? His name is Bob, too. Bob, the strange and unusual Norn Wizard.

You literally can't tell if his eyes are open or not.

To provide more insight on why I am confused, this is a picture of the Norn's parents. Notice how they don't share the same sprite OR the same coloration as their son?

@savannahs11

I don't think it's entirely natural. Every Norn in this group is from a website that makes colored versions of Norn Breeds. In this case, a crazy static Norn must be the result of this pigmentation experimentation.

It was born naturally in terms of in-game, however. I didn't tamper with them to force the breeding. That means he's special, cool! [ngrin]

That's really exciting.

Each one of these Norns born from those that I got in the Akamai Canny pack has so much personality. I know their names by their appearance, and it's refreshing to be able to identify members of the population that easily.

All of Generation A are Elders, and nearing the end of their lifespan. [nsunglasses]

Most of Generation B is a group of adults, ripe and ready to populate the world. I love the feeling of progression in this game, as if every generation is some mighty hurdle leaped. Added with the random mutation factor, it adds for a quite enriching experience (Even though the most I do is sit on my butt armchair general style).

My love/hate for this game is as strong as Love/Hate Brass Knuckles. It is a remarkable experience, don't get me wrong. The reason I play this game for months on end is because it has a replay value that is nearly infinite. It fails as a playable game (without mods that is), but succeeds in creating artificial life. Wondrous.

Small addition: Bob the neon Norn died. He had no kin, and as such did not spread his strange coloration through the population (In hindsight, I should have exported him, but it's more natural this way).

We are now far into Generation F. I've now lost count of who is who, as all of the current Norns are new, foreign sons of the first Generation.

SOMEHOW, when I came back all of the power-ups hidden throughout the level were pressed. Every single one. I checked up on all the Norns and they were all there, so... I suppose we have an explorer Norn that escaped confinement and activated them all. I can only assume he died to a rolling ball trap.
