Game suspended for financial reasons?   1 | 2

I know it's very little, but I found this French (possibly Wallon, like Fishing Cactus?) website stating -- I THINK -- that for financial reasons, the release of Creatures Online has been suspended until further notice.

However, my French is mediocre at best, so I really have very little means of making sure that that is what it says, or, for that matter, judging the news website for trustworthiness.

Any good speakers of French around who would be willing to help?

Also -- is this game EVER coming out? :|

[edit; thanks, Laura, for making that link clickable -- I never have been the best at code-y stuff :) ]

Well, so much for that. I'm not surprised at all.

I did have my doubts on just how good this game was going to be, but the publicity would've been nice. Ah well.

Well, that's an answer at least, there's only so long you can work on a game before you run out of money.

Hopefully if Epistory is a success, they can pick it back up. I suppose if we want to do anything, we could try to promote that game a little, though I'm not really in the mood to cheerfully keep retweeting their stuff.

I mean, really, they could have done something, kept the last two rooms for post release updates and fixed the last bugs instead, the game looked so very close to done... And they could have told us, if it's as simple as running out of money and they weren't gagged by the publisher because of some legal dispute.

It probably doesn't depend on them but on big ben, I mean they would have let us know if they were allowed to, for sure.

Boo... Is there any chance that this latest news could just be hearsay? I wish we knew where Pockett Videogames had got their information from. It was only in mid-October that we found out the release date had been pushed back to 2016. :(

it doesn't seem like that "gamepressure.com" is any more reliable than all the gaming magazines and retailers that just put random placeholder dates on things.

This website that came out with the news says "according to our information", which means they're at least pretending to have some inside knowledge.

I did some Facebook-detective-ing, and this post has Fishing Cactus stating they're sharing sadness with someone making an inquiry -- which doesn't seem very hopeful to me...

I do still hope it's just a lot of smoke and no fire though -- I was, and obviously still am, looking forward to the new game -- even if chances are it won't really live up to the classics. Call me superficial, but I just really liked the thought of being able to keep some norns on my smartphone :) If only someone could get BigBen to tell us what's going on :\

I just wish FC and BigBen would realize that COMMUNICATION is most important to fans. The silence is what makes us angry. Honest and open dialogue with the community, even if it involves news that may not be what we what to hear, would be ideal.

This doesn't surprise me at all; Creatures Online seemed like a terribly large project for a small company such as Fishing Cactus to achieve. However, I think that their lack of communication has destroyed whatever relationship they had with the community.

As disappointing as this news would be if true, jumping to conclusions and misplacing blame are not what we should be doing. Non-disclosure agreements are absolutely a thing and are more than likely what's keeping Fishing Cactus from saying much of anything.

We have absolutely no idea as to what exactly is going on behind the scenes. It's entirely possible that Big Ben and ProSieben were demanding lots and lots of changes that FC could not keep up with or perhaps even refused to comply thus ending in a situation where CO's funding would be withheld. Could also be that Big Ben/ProSieben are having enormous amounts of financial trouble that need to be kept under wraps for various reasons and so on. Of course this is only my speculation but it certainly has precedent in the gaming industry.

@mlohse yeah, if we all pitch in just 10K dollars each, the game would be funded in to time at all! :P

Razgriz has a point, maybe it's not just missed deadlines, but more of a case of Executive Meddling. Bleh :(

That's a tad bit extreme isn't it? Fishing Cactus tried their bests and they worked hard to try to make the dream come true, and it might aswell come true if they get around the funding problem. The amount of work they got on the game (including getting it to a playable state!) in the small amount of time given was impressive I'd say, and they can only improve from there if the development continues.

This is saddening news. According to PockettGames' contact page, PockettGames has been around since 1999 as a magazine, so it seems to pass the CRAAP Test.

I'll still hold out and wait. I thought Rare/Rareware had died many years ago, but then they surprised me with Yooka Yaylee years later. Never believe that a company has totally given up or died, man. They can always surprise you.

I remember that a few years ago I wanted to give this to my little sister as a birthday present, now she's already attended high school. If it takes any longer, I will be able to give it as a present to her children :\

That's a bit different. "Rare" still exists, Microsoft bought them. But nobody employed in the current "Rare" are the same people that made all those awesome games back in the day.

The people who are making Yooka Yaylee are the Rare devs from the golden days, but they're no longer part of "Rare". They are a completely seperate entity.

A more apt comparison would be to point to Cyberlife as being dead, and Steve Grand (the 'golden days' of Cyberlife) working on a new exciting project totally seperate from Cyberlife.

Nobody cares what Rare/Cyberlife/Fishing Cactus/PocketGames does now, because none of them have anything to do with the 'golden days' that made great games. The ones responsible for that, the devs themselves, have all moved on.

(Edited that last paragraph multiple times because I just woke up, and can't words good yet xD)

"Bland facebook game" So by that measure, you're saying nobody wants C3/DS? Or Creatures at all? I realize that things like microtransactions are frequently done distastefully but as far as we know, CO was still a Creatures game at its core. From the footage that was shared with us, it sure seemed to play like a Creatures game with shenanigans provided by uncooperative norns.

Also I sure would like to know what Facebook game has intricate things like detailed genetics and breeding that goes beyond "combine two to get one extra!" and etc... :P

Anyways, to add a bit more speculation: the mobile market is very very very volatile and more often than not is thought of as a Wild West of sorts. It's entirely possible that Big Ben and ProSieben were seeing pretty bad omens if they were to release CO in the current market. A very good and apt comparison to give you an idea of it works is to compare Angry Birds and Candy Crush Saga. Angry Birds was of course, a pretty big and profitable series a while back. The game's success allowed Rovio to expand operations and establish what were probably lucrative deals for other companies to get in on that cash flow.

Compare to now, where Rovio has recently had to layoff a sizable number of employees to stay afloat because the series lost any relevance it had gained with the overall audience on mobile. Now Candy Crush enjoys that same level of income and eventually that tower will collapse on itself just like with Angry Birds due to some newcomer that will seize and eat up that audience.

At any rate for a mobile game it was taking way too long in development, like Razgriz said it's a very volatile market.

BTW the Candy Crush studio has been bought by Activision...

I feel bad for Fishing Cactus. As upsetting as it may be to wait for a game for close to 5 years and it doesn't get released, imagine working on a game for 5+ years and it doesn't get released, and everyone blames things on you, and on top of that people say things like "no one cared about that game anyway". I mean, I feel sorry for myself most, but I also feel sorry for them.
They certainly showed they were trying, trying to make a cool game and interacting with the community. I still follow Andrea on Twitter, and Sophie is all right.

I'm still hoping the can salvage it, the company hasn't gone under, they just have to be at a point where they have money and time to spare, and negotiate with BBI. It's in the interest of both to release the game, after spending resources on it.

@SpaceShipRat

*Sucks up new Grandroids information like a vacuum*

It's hard to find new information on this game if you're not a backer, even if you've been trying to keep an eye on it since the project started. I'd know! So far though, what I've seen and heard has been wicked tantalizing, especially considering that Creatures was pretty much ahead of its time when it came out. I am fully confident that when Grandroids is complete, it's probably going to be more than we could have hoped for.

By the by, for anybody else that's been following it, I bumped into this demo video the other day! Looks like Steve's finally working on the environment and interactive objects a bit more!

@Grendel_Man at least a small interlude of discussing a non-cancelled context relevant game makes for a nice change from the bickering about whether or not CO is any good or whether fishing cactus are awful or not! [nlaugh] honestly this topic needs more positivity- the community can be surprisingly bitter and harsh on the subject of basically the only thing close to a sequel that creatures has gotten!

Since it's in the context of game cancellation and staying positive, is it worth telling people to leave? I know it's about relevance, but it seems a little harsh QvQ
