Abyss Dragon Norns v2.0 TWB   C3DS   Lurhstaap | 4/6/2016  log in to like post  1

The new Abyss Dragons use the sprites of the original Draconian Norns and the Gargoyle Norns. Both must be installed for the Abysses to look right.

While not yet perfect (I doubt I'll ever consider them such since there will always be something else to tinker with), these guys are now good enough to release, I think. Let me know if you encounter any serious (or even not-so-serious) issues with them, please! The only major problem I know of right now is that the Artemia Sea metaroom tends to be too hot for them. Using the Heater on its chilling settings might help, but I haven't actually tried it.

Otherwise, they do great in the Hydro Nornterrarium, the Deep Abyss (of course), and the updated Aquanornia. I haven't gotten any other aquatic metarooms to work on this machine yet but I'm sure they'll do fine anywhere there is a sufficient quantity of prey and the temperatures aren't too extreme (though they deal better with excess cold than excess heat as a rule) - this includes terrestrial rooms. I have done much less terrestrial testing of them, but they frequently use the upper parts of the Aquanornia room and they seemed to do fine in Veridia the few times I raised them there, so you don't need to keep them in water at all if you don't want to.

As the title notes, this is a TWB version of the breed. I plan to do a CFF version as well to avoid the temperature-related issues, but I wanted both available and the TWB version is the more "true to concept" one anyway. So I did it first.

There is a text file with some care/feeding information in the .zip, and a WHOLE lot of export files representing various genetic colors. Some look rather similar but are still genetically different. There is one male and one female for each genetic color (which often look very different thanks to the differences in the underlying sprites). I recommend keeping them in groups of no fewer than four individuals, as they are highly social and get lonely more easily than normal. Also, do not be alarmed by fighting - they are tough and will not kill each other except in the most extreme circumstances (none of mine have ever killed each other but it's theoretically possible).

Please do not cross-breed or splice Abyss Dragons with other breeds (including version one Abysses) unless you are willing to deal with a lot of stillborns, sliders, and other totally nonviable offspring. They have new organs, deleted genes, and otherwise will not cross well with others.

Ah, I see. That's just the usual CFF 'babies tend to stick near parents' instinct at work.

I don't know about that - I use the Zander Fish from the vendor agent. I've never tried to transfer the ones from Lost Seas. ACv4 has plenty of native life, though - the only thing I felt a real need to add was a few bug type prey animals. I used the Shrimpton and the bottom-living trilobites and such from Lost Seas.

It wasn't even trying to hit its dad, it was just chasing after it.
The Bridge colony is...very spread out now. Once they hit Adolescent they apparently got crowded and fled to different areas of the metaroom, one got all the way to Engineering and hid all the way at the bottom.
I'll add Biodome and ACv4 to the list of possible metarooms! Do the Past Seas Zander Fish transfer well there, too?

The babies can be surprisingly hostile for some reason. I've noticed over and over that they tend to feud and fight a lot when young, then change their minds and become less violent and more fond of each other when they hit sexual maturity. I think it's sexuality kicking in - all of a sudden all those other Norns stop being rivals and annoyances and start being potential mates, which seems to change how they view each other pretty dramatically. I've seen dragons that hated each other turn around and start tickling and changing their mind as soon as they hit Youth. Adults are usually more mellow, having slapfights mainly when hungry or otherwise already in a bad mood.

That's good! Generally speaking they should be able to take care of themselves but sometimes bad stuff happens, like the overheating in Artemia Sea. FWIW I have been able to raise them successfully in the Biodome and Aquatillis Caverna v4 now as well so you can add those rooms to your list of options. AC is especially good for the Abysses.

The ones that died were all firstgens, and then I deleted all the second-gen eggs at once by mistake.
However I have established two new colonies, one in the Deep Abyss and one in a heavily steam-rocked Aquatic Ark Bridge. So far one baby has been born, and one of the first things it did was chase around its father.

Oops. XD Sometimes it's for the best... I've got some really bizarre mutations spreading in my group right now and it's making me seriously consider starting a new one. :p

I will!
But later.
I had a whole bunch die on me and I need to re-establish a breeding population after accidentally deleting all the eggs.

Huh. Well, sometimes the bubbles do appear briefly as the Norn switches back and forth between its land breathing emitter and its water breathing emitter, but I've never known that to cause harm. It sounds like this might have been an unusual incident, though? Try using the Biochemistry Kit to watch their Chemical 110 and Air to see what's going on. If it's a problem common to the room it will keep happening.

...I wasn't tracking their 110, but one was limping severely as if it was drunk. I was using the Aquatic Ark mod, and as soon as that one was put into the Norn Terrarium it had the drowning bubbles. The bubbles disappeared quickly and then the norn died; the Hoverdoc reported three dits of Fear, no bacteria, and no other drives.
It may have overheated but I haven't set the X-ray agent up to track 110 yet.

Are you using the Roamer or any other anti-bacterial agents? If not they may have gotten sick. They have some disease resistance but they can still definitely die of it. Otherwise, I'm not sure, but the Jungle seems like a likely place for poisonous agents to be hiding. They could have gotten into cyanide or a large amount of glycotoxin somehow - not sure how, but that's the only other thing I can think of. Either that, or... are you tracking their levels of chemical 110? It just occurred to me that the Jungle might actually be rather warm for them.

Also, is there anything in the Jungle Terrarium that's toxic to them?
Two died in the Jungle Terrarium. A large number of their organs had rapidly gone to about 20% health really quickly (they were still in Child stage).
