Felis Norns   C3DS   Ghosthande | 11/3/2013  log in to like post  20

I was a little sad that Siamese Norns didn't have a unique genome of their own, so I made one. The Felis Norns are CFE Gizmo-based, carnivorous (they can fall back on food for their protein needs if they need to, but they really prefer meat!), scared of water, and like to "play hunt" when bored. They use the Siamese Norn sprites.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the yellow bugs. My Toxics eat them without trouble. I just fed a newly hatched normal Norn one and he died instantly, which would make me suspect ATP Decoupler, except nothing's showing up on either the medical monitor or hoverdoc- which ATPD normally does.

@Nox Felis Norns have instincts to eat bugs and critters (and no instinct to eat fruit!) Most Norns don't (although Bondis do, when they're hungry for fat.)

@Doringo It's hardcoded? I've noticed Norns giving each other all kinds of advice for other things, including behavior I know wasn't coded by their instincts ("eem bored" "maybe approach norn";).

ETA: Tried having a Toxic push the bugs' nest, which supposedly "causes an allergic sneezing reaction". Nothing. When he started eating the bugs, histamines and antigen 5 appeared on the medical monitor very briefly, but 1) that's not normally instant death and 2) it didn't happen in the normal one. So, still no answers really, except that possibly the nest and bug effects got mixed up.

I had a lot of success changing the genes of the Colortrue Pearl Mermaid Norns to make them much more likely to eat critters/bugs. Sometimes I forget about this when I copy the gene to use as another base, and I end up with an extinct population of some critters after awhile!

@Nox
Creature instincts can easily be changed in genetics, but the advice they give "Maybe eat fruit" is rather hardcoded, so they probably get given the wrong advice for their genome.

My purebred chi-chis have eaten the yellow bugs without me noticing and they havn't died at all, it might depend on how much they eat.

Can I gather that the carnivorous feature of the Felis Norns means they're predisposed to eat both bugs and critters? One of the things which mystifies me about most of my norns is that they don't appear to view bugs or critters as a potential food source -- although they usually will eat critters if I tell them to do so. Even many of my Bondi norns have needed prompting in order to eat crobsters.

The only drawback I might see to the Felis Norns is that you would probably need to keep them out of the Terra metaroom if they're prone to eat bugs as well as critters -- any creature which eats one of the yellow bugs in the room that connects to the Meso dies (unless the norn is immortal and can't die), because the insects are poisonous.

@ylukyun The fear of water was actually lifted (slightly modified) from GM's Waterfall Grendels- it uses a reaction to convert "body of water" smell into fear, and a receptor that alters the reaction rate based on the amount of air in the Norn's system.
In the WGs, that receptor keeps the fear from kicking in until they start drowning, but in Felis Norns it activates as soon as they enter the water.

@KittyTikara Wow, they are. :O I kind of wish I'd come up with more extensive changes when I was making these... I didn't think they'd be interesting enough to get much attention. Guess we're all fans of cats around here! [nlaugh]

I wonder how well these guys will cross breed with a Stinger Norns? *adds them to a feral run*

Edit: These are the second most popular breed, apparently.

How did you implement the fear of water?

They don't scratch the furniture, do they? :P Thanks, InsanityPrelude!

I recommend TwilightCat's Cat Pack (scroll down to "Mouse" ) to go with these. [nsmile]
